The owner imagined putting location sensors on staff name badges to track their workflow progress between table and kitchen, temperature sensors on plates to make sure food was warm, and other sensors throughout his facility that would help him monitor various aspects of his operation. His goal was to find ways to better manage his staff and make their processes more efficient, presumably to cut waste and improve the throughput of customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I was reminded of this story a few weeks ago when I got together with a group of friends in a semi-annual gathering held at a sports bar. As my friend George tried to get the attention of our waitress, he commented:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Any time the pitcher is empty, they are losing money.<\/p><cite>&#8211; George J.<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"572\" src=\"http:\/\/sparkspoke.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/oldpro5-1024x572.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-363\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sparkspoke.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/oldpro5-1024x572.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sparkspoke.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/oldpro5-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sparkspoke.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/oldpro5-768x429.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sparkspoke.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/oldpro5.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>How many people in this picture might be ready for a refill? How could you tell?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At first I chuckled to myself, for a moment feeling like we were a bunch of college students who felt the most important thing on the table was the pitcher of beer. As I thought about it, though, I realized George had boiled down the customer experience to something very precise. As our group caught up and socialized with each other, George didn&#8217;t want to stop what he was doing &#8212; enjoying the conversation &#8212; in order to flag down a waiter to refill the pitcher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Zeki, too, understood the need to focus on the customer experience rather than the backend processes. He advised the restaurant owner that he really only needed to put a sensor in one place \u2013 on a connected beverage coaster. Zeki reasoned that all the process parameters the owner wanted to track were in the service of a key consideration: making sure the customer did not feel like they were waiting for service. Other aspects of the experience &#8212; availability of seating, quality of the food, location of wait staff &#8212; while important, did not require the same level of sensing and monitoring enough to justify the added system complexity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"623\" height=\"437\" src=\"http:\/\/sparkspoke.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/image.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-332\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sparkspoke.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/image.png 623w, https:\/\/sparkspoke.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/image-300x210.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 623px) 100vw, 623px\" \/><figcaption>Many restaurants already invest in wireless coasters to notifying customers their table is ready. Adding force sensors to detect when a glass is empty would add to their value, making them a powerful sales tool.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When IoT Projects Go Off-Track<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A 2016 Gartner report forecasted that 50% of business processes will include IoT by 2020. It further claimed that in 2018, 75% of IoT initiatives would take twice as long as originally planned. In May of 2017, a <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.cisco.com\/press-release-content?type=webcontent&amp;articleId=1847422\">survey by Cisco<\/a> indicated that only 26% of IoT projects were considered successful; that&#8217;s a 74% failure rate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Admittedly these data points are old, and there have not been followup surveys to update the numbers. Updated numbers aside, it&#8217;s significant to note there was no definition of what &#8220;success&#8221; means in terms of these initiatives. Deploying a system that successfully collects data according to its design parameters is significant in its own right. It&#8217;s an entirely different proposition &#8212; and one that is more helpful to an enterprise &#8212; to ensure a system leverages data insights in some way that dramatically improve organizational performance. Better performance is the goal, data analysis and responsive intervention should be a means to that end. The practical reality can be much more difficult than it appears, however. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One senior executive at Gartner spoke to the challenges of planning and executing projects that truly impact strategy and can open new opportunities:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Product-centered enterprises will be the worst affected. They will seek to launch smarter, connected products, although this will often be a reactive, tactical approach that seeks to address their competition&#8217;s IoT product. <\/p><cite>&#8211; Alfonso Velosa<br>Research Vice President, Gartner Inc.<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The promise of IoT lies not in collecting massive amounts of data to make ongoing activities more efficient. The breakout opportunity lies in determining how information available through IoT sensing systems can enable new ways of delivering products and services, as well as developing new products and services that meet unmet needs for new and existing customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Identifying the Right Data and Drawing Appropriate Insights<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The unstated reality of IoT is that it is arguably now possible to \u201cdo it all\u201d in terms of tracking lots of things through sensors. It has become perhaps too easy to sense many things and collect massive quantities of data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li> Sensors are cheap and often integrated in even common devices that are not built for a specific purpose<\/li><li>Connectivity is readily available and enabled for a broad spectrum of devices<\/li><li>Big data sets can be warehoused inexpensively and made available globally. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The incentive to think creatively and be judicious about collecting sensed data is weaker due to the economic considerations. In part due to this phenomenon, enterprises focusing on IoT-related opportunities tend to target existing processes. Design questions may center on issues such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>How can we manage people and resources more efficiently?<\/li><li>How can we improve product quality and throughput?<\/li><li>How can we reduce waste in manufacturing or in energy usage?<\/li><li>How can we anticipate\/detect equipment failures remotely, before the disrupt processes?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These are questions associated with \u201cbusiness as usual\u201d thinking; they assume existing processes and aim at improving the bottom line performance by controlling costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In contrast, disruptive business development come from a focus on top line performance, typically the growth of new opportunities. These emerge from a focus on finding new ways to boost revenue either through enhancements to existing products and services or the development of entirely new ones. The challenge is to find simple ways to correlate simple-to-sense physical phenomena (geolocation, proximity, acceleration, visual cues detected, etc.) to aspects of an improved customer experience and then connecting that to an appropriate business model. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Early Successes: Leveraging Geolocation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recently, geolocation has proved a valuable data&nbsp;stream in creating new business services. Ride sharing services, location-based contextual advertising, and location-based features on social media platforms are just some services that have become significant with the introduction of smartphones with embedded GPS chipsets. We need never suffer for want of a Starbucks beverage as long as our smartphone is in our pocket. Should we lose that phone, however, our daily lives are suddenly much more challenging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Examples of Other Opportunities<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While geolocation may have been the low hanging fruit of sensing opportunities, with some creativity we can no doubt identify a multitude of others. A few examples come to mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Creating Cross-Disciplinary Connections<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2001 I met with the project manager for MIT\u2019s Stata Center to learn more about the building\u2019s design. One of the key features was the creation of a cafeteria on the 3rd floor, with wide open space and even an outdoor amphitheatre-style seating area. The rationale for this space was not focused on convenient food service as much as it was on creating a space where researchers from multiple disciplines would be drawn together and \u2014 the designers hoped \u2014 develop ideas for interdisciplinary research through their conversations. The architects had to leave these interactions to serendipity, however, as there was no way at that time to proactively encourage interactions. Imagine if a system were deployed that would sense the identity of people in the space using their smartphones or ID badges, look up their publicly-available professional profiles and publications, and suggest where they sit in order to meet someone with common interests \u2014 or for the more adventurous, someone with wildly different interests \/ background to push them out of their comfort zone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"732\" src=\"http:\/\/sparkspoke.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/MIT-Stat-Ctr-4-1024x732.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-358\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sparkspoke.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/MIT-Stat-Ctr-4.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sparkspoke.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/MIT-Stat-Ctr-4-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sparkspoke.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/MIT-Stat-Ctr-4-768x549.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>MIT&#8217;s Stata Center has a unique design externally. The building cafeteria was intentionally positioned to be a crossroads for researchers and visitors to promote interaction.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Improving Learning by Tracking, and Influencing, Classroom Participation<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By either tracking the &#8220;gating&#8221; (on\/off) of installed microphones, using a highly-precise microphone array with locational capability, or leveraging smartphone microphones using an appropriate app, it would be possible to sense how many different voices are contributing during a classroom session and thus how many different students are contributing to the discussion. If an app were used that also enabled wireless content sharing and\/or control of a shared screen in the classroom, participation could be characterized with additional parameters related to content sharing beyond verbal communication. Taking this idea beyond the monitoring aspect and injecting the idea of proactively impacting class activities, the app might  \u201cnudge\u201d students who were not participating by sending an alert to their mobile device, inviting them to share comments or even prompting them with a question relevant to the current discussion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"475\" src=\"http:\/\/sparkspoke.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/classroom-participate-1024x475.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-383\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sparkspoke.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/classroom-participate.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/sparkspoke.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/classroom-participate-300x139.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sparkspoke.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/classroom-participate-768x356.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Increasing Agricultural Production:  Sensors + ML = The New Fertilizer<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.infosys.com\">INFOSYS<\/a> took on an IoT project for a customer that was in the business of selling fertilizer, seed, and other agricultural products. The customer&#8217;s executive team asked  INFOSYS to look at how they might improve their products to minimize waste and increase growth yield. Rather than take a biochemistry approach to the problem, the design project team prototyped a system that combined automated hydroponics, and machine learning. They named the open source project &#8220;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.infosys.design\/plantio\/\" target=\"_blank\">Plant.IO<\/a>.&#8221;\u00a0In just 45 days and for a cost of $40 in materials (including PVC piping, artificial lighting, rubber tubing, pumps, sensors, circuits), the team came up with a way to dramatically improve crop yield by using realtime data streams and machine learning (ML) to optimize growing conditions. The most significant outcome of the project, however, may have been that their client realized that they were not in the business of producing <strong><em>molecules<\/em><\/strong>, but rather that they were in the business of improving <strong><em>growth. <\/em><\/strong>As such, information collected through an IoT system has become another tool in serving their customers in that mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" src=\"http:\/\/sparkspoke.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/plant-io.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-359\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sparkspoke.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/plant-io.jpg 640w, https:\/\/sparkspoke.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/plant-io-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption>PVC piping, artificial lighting, rubber tubing, pumps, sensors, circuits and software all combined in the Plant.IO prototype system.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Do We Focus IoT Systems on What Matters Most?<br><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How do we identify and deliver future disruptions that IoT enables? It comes down to a creative analysis of an entity\u2019s mission and the nature of its opportunities. Some opportunities arise due to operational elements that can be sensed and packaged in new ways to create valuable offerings, while others emerge from unmet needs amongst customers in current or adjacent markets that are accessible due to current operations.
